Once I receive my class assignment what do I do?
First make sure you read the rules and guidelines. Then contact your assigned teacher and discuss their style of teaching and how they want you to communicate with the class. Many want their driver to write letters and post cards as well as using emails. They want the written communicatio because it incourages the students to write you back and imporve their writing skills. You and your teacher are a team so work together to accomplish the goal of encouraging kids and teaching them about the wonderful world of trucking.

Don't forget about using our iPhone or Android App. It's free and a great way to share pictures with a pin in a Google map with the class. To get the app click here. Phone App.

What should I write about?
What you write about depends on where you are, and what you are doing. Don't be afraid of telling the students about your everyday life. You may think hauling freight ordinary, but to children, its a whole new world. They will naturally be curious about what you haul, where you go, what sights you see, and how much time and money it costs to travel across the country. You can open up the world to the students in a new, exciting, way through your letters.

Once you find out what the kids are studying and when, you can help the teacher find learning materials as you write. For example, if your class is learning about the Rocky Mountains, and you have a run going through Colorado, try getting a tourist brochure of the Rockies, or a pamphlet from the National Park Service.

Be sure to remember the age group of your assigned class and write accordingly. How you correspond with second graders will be very different from how you correspond with eighth graders. If you have trouble determining what is appropriate, ask the teacher for help.

Why does Trucker Buddy have so many rules and guidelines?

The rules and guidelines are in place to not only protect the children but to protect you as well. Following these rules keeps anyone from accusing you of inappropriate behavior and protects your good name. These also protect the children and our program from harm.

May I visit my class with my truck?
We encourage you to visit your class but you need to first get permission from your teacher and your company for their instructions and regulations. Make sure you adhere to all Trucker Buddy Guidelines. As a matter of courtesy and safety, never visit your assigned school unexpectedly. Children are NEVER allowed to ride in the truck and all activities must be supervised by the teacher. This is a protection for the students as well a protection for you too.

Do not allow the students to climb on the fith wheel or on the tires as they could fall and hurt themselves. Always help the students up into the cab or in the trailer to protect them from a fall. Inappropriate touching of the students while helping them into the truck is NEVER allowed and will mean instant elimination from the program and could cause you to be prosecuted. Always make sure your teacher or another administrator is with you while helping the students.

Teach safety like blind spots, stopping distances, seat belts and turning radiuses. Show them that the truck is your business and it's how you make a living for you and your family.

Be sure to bath and shave (for men) and where clean clothes. Wearing your company uniform if you have one always makes a good impression.

This is your opportunity to put a face behind the wheel of your truck so make the most of it.

What if my class doesn't write to me?
We recommend that you write a personal letter to the teacher, then wait about a month for a response. If your class is not responding you will need to find out the reason and contact us if you would like to be assigned to a different class.

Do I have to renew at the end of each school year?
Yes. In the spring you will receive a renewal form. You MUST send in your renewal form by July 15th each year if you wish to remain in the program for the next school year. If you do not send in your renewal form, you will be removed from the program. You must send in your requests by mail, fax, or through the web site. No phone calls please.

May I write to the students during the summer?
No. Do not write to your assigned class during the summer. Write to your class only after you receive your new match in the fall. Letters will be mailed when all enrolled schools have begun classes.

Are their any dues or required fees to signing up with Trucker Buddy?
No. Trucker Buddy is funded through the generous contributions of our sponsors. Trucker Buddy drivers give their time which is their greatest contribution.

Can I get an assigned class near where I live?
You may request a specific teacher or school near your home if you contact that teacher in advance and obtain permission. However, taking classes in a different area than where you live helps broaden the learning experience of the students. The students then have a better understanding of what it's like living in a different part of the United States.

What is appropriate language for the students?
All foul language, questionable jokes, and racial, political, or religious remarks are unacceptable. Teachers review all letters to and from the children prior to distribution, so use good judgment and common sense. Remember, children are impressionable and aren't accustomed to adult language or conversation. If you think for a moment it may not be appropriate, don't write it.

Where do you get your funding?
All operations comes from corporate sponsors, including suppliers to the trucking industry and motor carriers.

Click here for the complete list of our current sponsors.

May I take a child in my truck with me?
Absolutely not. All activities, including school visits and tours of your truck require prior permission from your assigned teacher and school and any violation is grounds for removal from the Trucker Buddy program. Almost all carriers prohibit riders and for safety reasons, truck trips are prohibited at any time.

Why was my teacher re-assigned to another driver?
Trucker Buddy will only make new assignments for three reasons: (1) you or your teacher requests it, (2) no renewal forms are sent to us, or (3) you move without a forwarding address, and mail is sent back to us.

What is a renewal form, and what is it used for?
A renewal form is a form that is sent out during the spring - typically March through April - and must be filled out by every driver who wishes to participate in Trucker Buddy for the next school year. The form asks if you are happy in your class assignment, if you desire a change, if you have moved, and your opinion. We must have your request form in our office no later than July 15 each year. If you do not send in your renewal form by that date, your teacher will be reassigned. We cannot accept phone calls in lieu of filled out renewal forms. You may send the completed renewal form to the Trucker Buddy office through the regular or E-mail.

Are contests or games acceptable?
In general, yes, but check with your assigned teacher first. Try contests or games that are geographical, historical, or mathematical in nature. Keep in mind the age of the children. Challenge your class but with problems that are geared toward their grade level.

How do I contact my assigned teacher?
Always ask your teacher how she would prefer to be contacted. Many prefer E-Mails or letters but some can receive phone calls. Remember, most teachers don't have a phone in their class so calls may hinder the classroom operations.

What if I want to take on more than one class?
Drivers who have been in the Trucker Buddy program for at least one year may request up to two additional classes. We have found that three classes is the maximum number even the most conscientious driver can handle.

What are Trucker Buddy office hours?
Our driver/teacher liaison office is open Monday through Thursday 9:00 am through 5:00 p.m.. Note that all times are CST and located in Alabama.

Can I choose a class anywhere I want?
If you have a prior relationship with a teacher and you both request each other then well match you together. Many drivers have small children so we encourage you going to your child's teacher and asking them to be involved. You may request any region or grade and we make every effort to fulfill your request. Unfortunately, we can not always do so. Final selection of class location is the responsibility of Trucker Buddy.

What materials or items can I send to my assigned classroom?
Talk to your teacher, find out what the kids are studying and when, and what would be appropriate. If the class is studying the Rocky Mountains, pick up a pamphlet from the National Park Service. Use your imagination!

Can I put the Trucker Buddy logo on my truck?
Yes, but remember the Trucker Buddy name and logo are copyrighted and cannot be used without the express written permission from Trucker Buddy International. For more information, contact Trucker Buddy headquarters by E-mail.

I sponsor a Boy Scouts/ Girl Scouts troop. Can I be their Trucker Buddy too?
Trucker Buddy is for students in a public or private classroom setting. Please call us if you want an exeption to this rule.

One of the letters from my class was too personal. How do I address this?
For any reason you are uncomfortable with any letter, contact your assigned teacher to discuss it or call the Trucker Buddy office. Sometimes students want to contact you individually and this strictly prohibited. This is a protection for the students and you too.

I'd like to have a class of a specific religious/ethnic group. Is this an option?
Trucker Buddy does not determine the religious or ethnic background of any participant. Keep in mind, classes are usually made up of children of many backgrounds, a fact which greatly enhances the pen-pal relationship.

How long will it take to get assigned to a class?
We make every effort to assign drivers within thirty days subject to class availability. Please note that requests made after second semester will be assigned for the next school year.

Can I put the Trucker Buddy Logo on my truck or on my website?
Please be aware that our logo is protected through copyright laws. Use of our name or logo without written permission is strictly forbidden. (This includes the Trucker Buddy logo on trucks, or on websites.) Anyone who wishes to use our logo in anyway must have permission from the Trucker Buddy office. If you have any questions contact our driver/teacher liaison office.

Please note that Trucker Buddy Participant Websites are a great way to show your communityinvolvement, and your pride in your industry, your company, and in the Trucker Buddy Program. Please protect the children by not printing their names or using any identifiable means. Also no direct contact between students and drivers is allowed.

QUESTIONS FOR TEACHERS

Once I receive my driver assignment, how do I get started?
When you receive your driver assignment, have the students write a letter of introduction, describing the classroom, what subjects they are studying, and what questions about the driver they wish to ask. What type of truck does he/she drive? What types of loads does he/she haul?. What states have they visited? Get to know your driver and the pen-pal relationship will develop naturally. The students should write a letter at least once a month to their assigned driver.

What should the class write about?
Have the children write about the subjects they will be studying. Write a personal letter to the driver to assist him/her in finding materials that would be helpful to your class. Help the driver choose topics and materials that are appropriate to the children’s ages and academic level.

Can our driver visit my class?
Trucker Buddy is a writing program. If you wish to have your driver visit your classroom, you must obtain permission from your driver and his company (your driver will probably do this) and make arrangements according to your school's policy and Trucker Buddy Guidlines. Any face to face meetings between teacher, driver, and class, are the sole responsibility of the teacher, school district, and the driver. Trucker Buddy cannot, and does not, take responsibility for, and shall be held harmless from, the consequences of any such additional activities.

What if my driver doesn't write?
Write a personal letter to the driver, then wait about a month for him/her to respond. Remember drivers are out on the road for many days out of the month, and their driving schedules may change. Trucker Buddy will not reassign your driver unless you or your driver requests it.

Do I have to renew every year?
Yes. In the spring you will receive a renewal form which you must fill out and send back to the Trucker Buddy office by July 15th each year if you wish to remain in the program for the next school year -- even if you plan to have the same driver assigned to your class. If you fail to send in your renewal form, you will be removed from the program. You must send in your request by regular or E-mail or through the web site. We cannot take phone calls in lieu of the forms.

Can my students write to the driver during the summer?
No. All correspondence between your assigned driver and your class must be reviewed by the teacher prior to distribution, and that's difficult during the summer. Children's addresses are never given out.

When should I contact my assigned driver?
Start writing as soon as you receive your assignment, which will arrive in the form of a match card containing the name and address of your assigned driver.

Are there any dues or required fees to signing up with Trucker Buddy?
No. Trucker Buddy is funded through the generous contributions of our sponsors. Trucker Buddy drivers give their time which is their greatest contribution.

Can I get a driver from my area?
If you have a specific driver you have in mind for your class, you may write to that driver. This is called a natural match. There are different positives about having a driver in your area verses somewhere else. Having a driver in your area helps allow the driver to bring his truck to the school. A driver that lives in a different part of the country helps broaden the learning experience. Also remember that drivers are the same everywhere. Regions are simply geography, this program is designed for the children, not for any particular region.

Where do you get your funding?
Our funding comes from corporate sponsors including suppliers to the trucking industry and motor carriers

Can a driver take a student in their truck with them?

Why was my driver reassigned?
Trucker Buddy does not reassign a driver unless someone in the match requests it, or no renewal forms are sent to us, or the driver can no longer participate.

What is a renewal form, and what is it for?
A renewal form is sent out during the spring - typically March or April, indicating your interest in remaining in the program for the next school year. This form is required if the individual wishes to participate in Trucker Buddy for the next school year. The form simply asks if you are happy in your match, if you desire a change, if you have moved, and your opinion. We must have your request form in our office no later than July 15. If you do not send in your renewal form your match person will be reassigned. We cannot accept phone calls in lieu of filled out renewal forms. Please fill out and send in the renewal form if you wish to remain in the program.

What are some contests or games I can implement with my driver?
Contests or games that are geographical, historical, or mathematical in nature, are great for helping students learn. Drivers literally see all types of geography, weather, and road conditions. Take advantage of this opportunity! Ask the driver if he/she can quiz the students, and work with the driver in creating questions.
